North Smithfield
Like other towns with the Blackstone Valley, North
Smithfield's early growth took place around its waterpower, derived from
the Branch and Blackstone rivers. The town covers 25 square miles and
consists of six villages.
Residential and commercial growth has taken place, yet the town retains
its rural character. The mill village of Slatersville - the first
planned mill village in the United States - serves as the town's center
of activities. The historic Slatersville Mill complex, slated for renovation,
will offer businesses the opportunity to relocate in one of America's
historic treasurers.
North Smithfield operates under a home rule charter and has an elected
town administrator and an elected town council.
