Smithfield offers both a high quality of life and easy interstate access to Providence,
Boston and Worcester. Known as Apple Valley for orchards introduced early in the
20th century, the town has transformed itself into a suburban community with a solid
industrial and commercial base. Smithfield contains 26.7 square miles of land area
and 1.2 square miles of water area.
North Central State Airport is located in the northeast corner of town. Corporate
charter flights are particularly attractive for companies located in and around
the Smithfield area. Smithfield is home to the regional office of Fidelity Investments
and is the town's largest employer. Also located in Smithfield is Bryant University,
a nationally recognized college of business established in 1863.
A town manager appointed by the Town Council oversees daily operation of the town.
